Heading into the final matchday, there were three teams who could clinch the Scottish Powerchair League Championship, Clyde Alba, Clyde Caledonia and current champions Tayside Dynamo.
All three were off to a flying start with victories in their opening games, Alba continued their terrific form of late and secured a second victory putting the pressure on the Dynamos who were to face Caledonia next. Despite a valiant effort from Clyde Caledonia the victory was secured by the Dynamos to set up a winner takes all finale.
Back in September 2016 when the fixtures were produced, it was very probable that many within the Clyde Alba and Tayside Dynamo ranks looked at the final schedule fixture (Clyde Alba v Tayside Dynamo) and thought, ” that could be a decider”, and so it turned out.
There was a great atmosphere between the teams and both posed for photographs with the championship trophy before the kick off. The friends, family and supporters of both teams were also enjoying the occasion and added to the atmosphere with their vocal support for their heroes. What a match they were treated to, Clyde Alba served up an onslaught to the Tayside Dynamo goal, however the Dynamo reargaurd were in the form of their lives (and had to be) to hold out for a 0-0 draw. Dynamos crowned champions for the third year, but unlike previous years by the narrowest of margins, huge credit to the Clyde Alba team, coaches and supporters for their sportmanship and congratulations to the Champions during and after the presentation of the trophy.
The Dynamos and Clyde Alba may have hogged the headlines at the close of the 2016/17 league championship, however all teams in the league can reflect on their own performances throughout the season with great pride. The standard of powerchair football being played increases day by day and our league has no easy games, on any given day any team is capable of winning. Next year there will be at least one team entering the league, the Lothian Wolves and work is underway to try and develop a team from the forth valley area, watch this space….
