EPFA Cup 2022 Finalists

Team Scotland

The Scottish Powerchair Football National Team headed to Switzerland last week for their debut European competition with the aims of finishing in the top 3 countries in order to qualify for the Nations Cup 2024 (Powerchair footballs EURO’S).

Opening the tournament in style over hosts Switzerland on the opening night, the Scotland team would run out 15-0 winners. Day two followed with a 6-0 win over Austria and a 1-1 draw with Spain who later made the semi-finals. Day three would be a busy one with three matches, however the squad showed their talents and drew 0-0 with favorites Belgium, then a 4-1 victory over Germany and a 6-2 victory over Italy.
After three days of competition the Scot’s, managed by Craig Peattie, Gareth Mitchelson, Steven Miller and Jordann Cunningham ended the group with four wins and two draws.

Next up would be the knockout stages with the semi-finals, the squad knowing a win at this stage would secure European football at Euro’s in 2024. The team once again showed their quality in a tough match against Germany (who later qualified for the Euro’s too) with a 2-0 victory.

The stage was then set for Scotland, at our first major European competition to play in the final. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be in the end, with Belgium winning 2-0 in the final.

Everyone connected with the team are so proud of their achievements, hard work and dedication. We hope the players enjoy a well earned break before we return at the end of September for the League Cup 2022-23.

We would like to take the time to thank all of you who supported us on our journey. Also our thanks to our national team sponsor Wheelchair Sports Europe who were with us every step of the journey. Also the Scottish FA and Para-Football for their continued support and backing not only in Switzerland but all year round.
Finally the European Powerchair Football Association who hosted the event and FIPFA who sanctioned it.
